Heritage projects require a level of care and expertise that goes beyond standard construction. Listed buildings and properties in conservation areas come with unique challenges—complex planning regulations, specialist consent requirements, and the need for materials and techniques that are compatible with historic fabric. Successfully working on these buildings means striking a careful balance between preservation and modern functionality.
With extensive experience in heritage architecture, we have worked on a wide range of projects, from extending and reconfiguring listed buildings to integrating hotel accommodation within a Grade II listed pub and converting a Grade II* listed stable block within a former hunting lodge into a modern two-storey home.

Above West Dean College, a centre of excellence in building conservation.
We understand the additional hurdles that come with historic properties, and we thrive on overcoming them. Where others might hesitate, we see opportunity.
Navigating the approval process for heritage projects requires detailed research, careful documentation, and a thorough understanding of planning and conservation policies. We know what it takes to secure specialist consents, working closely with conservation officers and heritage bodies to ensure that proposals meet both regulatory requirements and the needs of our clients.
Beyond the paperwork, we are passionate about the craft of historic buildings. We appreciate the importance of using appropriate materials and traditional techniques to ensure that any alterations respect and complement the original structure. Modern building materials often don’t interact well with historic fabric, leading to long-term damage—something we are always mindful of when designing and specifying materials.
Whether you need guidance on restoring a period property, extending a home in a conservation area, or navigating the challenges of a listed building project, we can help.

PreservingHistory, Embracing Heritage
Banks Cottage, located in Parham, Wiggonholt, Horsham, West Sussex, is a Grade II listed property with a rich history, believed to have once served as an illicit drinking house. The storage of contraband is thought to have caused the bending of the internal oak beams. While the property has been extensively refurbished and modernised, it still retains the charm and character of its historical heritage.
Honouring the Past, Securing the Future Nestled in the heart of Washington, West Sussex, The Frankland Arms is a Grade II listed pub with a rich history. Like many traditional inns, it faced closure after falling on hard times, another victim of the challenges affecting pubs across England.
But thanks to the dedication of its current owners, the pub has been reinvigorated, ensuring it remains a vital part of the local community.
Steeped in history, surrounded by an 18th-century deer park and gardens that are now part of a tranquil country park. The estate, once a royal forest known as Andredeswald (Saxon), was described in the chronicles of the Venerable Bede as an impenetrable haunt of deer, wolves, and wild boar.
I had the privilege of working on one of these properties, converting a former stable block into a beautiful three-bedroom family home while respecting its rich heritage.
